At Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester New York we have a sequence of 3 Stop Motion related classes.
The first is a Miniature Construction class. It's for stop motion sets as well as live action effects. We build a set that can be used in a stop motion project later on in the year.
The second class is called Single Frame Motion. This one is a lot of fooling around with the video lunch box to get students experience moving cut-outs, puppets, objects, the camera & pixilation.
The third class called Stop Motion. In this class we produce a stop motion film as a group project. We are considering adding a puppet building class, may be next year.
We have a small dedicated Stop Motion Studio. It's about the size of the MTV studios. It is all black with an overhead light grid and table. There is a tripod and a home made jib arm for the camera and a computer cart. We shoot digitally into a Mac using Frame Thief. We are generally doing some post effects with files before we output to video.
We have visiting Artists. Tom Gasek is coming this year as well as someone from MTV. We have had several students do stop motion senior thesis films and get jobs in the field. We have graduate and undergraduate programs in the School of Film & Animation where a student can specialize in Stop Motion if they like.
