I had an absolute blast test-driving Smoovie, a new stop-motion capture program for Mac.
| Smoovie is a fun, user-friendly program perfect for stop-motion animators, whether they be a newbie or a more seasoned professional. The interface is simple and easy to use as well as a breeze to navigate. I had no problem at all jumping right in and capturing images. Easy on the eyes and easy on the wallet, at just under fifty bucks, you too can be on your way to creating great animation with this swell product. | ![]() |
One great feature about Smoovie is users can import their own images using a Quicktime supported third-party camera or webcam. If you’re using a Macbook Pro like I am, then you’ll have the option of using that nifty little built-in webcam if you so choose. It was so easy; I opened the program, clicked “turn on camera,” and Shazam! Instant stop-motion possibilities beyond my wildest imaginations.
One thing I would like to point out is the downside to using the built-in Webcam as your primary camera is you might be limited on certain shots and angles. That’s why I suggest you have another supported camera handy if you’re planning on creating different angles. Accidentally capture an image that throws off your groove? No problem; just edit it out. You can batch delete or discard unwanted images individually.

The Inspector Feature allows you to change the aspect ratio, edit scene properties, add music, and alter the scene’s speed. This is also the place where you can change the name of your film from the default “Untitled Smoovie,” to whatever you want, such as “My Totally Awesome Awesome Film.” |
The Sharing option is another feature on my favorites list. Much like iMovie, Smoovie allows you to instantly share your film on Youtube and iTunes.
| It took me less than twenty minutes to shoot, edit, score and complete my first stop-motion film made with Smoovie. There were no steep learning curves, no hours spent reading a manual, no pulling of the hair…it truly was a breeze. | ![]() |
I would recommend Smoovie to all Mac users; especially those who are looking to learn the art of stop-motion. I’ve already suggested the program to fellow Mac users, many of whom have been waiting for a more simplified animation program.
So go check Smoovie out.
You won’t be disappointed, and you’ll be amazed at just what you can do with this great software.
If you want to read more about the feature list, would like to try the free trial or buy Smoovie you can do so on the official Smoovie web site by clicking here.
