Ken - Yes, I suppose it's OK for me to say publicly that I'm animating the puppet with the six arms. She's not fighting (yet) but any animation with her is tedious! That's because the six arms make it difficult to find a place to grab to turn her torso and mostly it's because of the tips of the six swords.
Any move I make with this puppet affects the positions of the tips of those swords, so to make the animation as smooth as it needs to be, I need to check and recheck the tip registration many times before shooting a frame. That's hard enough to deal with in a shot where she has both feet planted on the floor but, while she's walking... that just get's crazy!
I don't think there's any chance of another preview being released any time soon. The effects will take a long time to composite and produce because there are layers of effects that all need to be completed and compiled into every frame. There will also be digital matte paintings, set extensions and atmospheric set 'enhancements' which will also need to be put into most shots so, don't hold your breath while you wait.

First Dynamation Frame
Discussion started by Ron Cole , on 22 January 09:30 AM
This might seem like it's coming late in the game but, I'm just about to shoot my first frame of Dynamation. Up till now, I've had a bunch of shots to shoot which had no need to blend any live action together with the animation but...
The stage is set, test frames have been taken, surface gauges have been chosen and pre-positioned, Dragon Stop Motion has the live action loaded and I'm ready to shoot the first frame...
HELP I'M SCARED!!! Only kidding, I've waited a very long time to get to this point and couldn't be happier. My only real trouble right now is space - I gotta squeeze myself between the camera and a light every frame, without bumping into either one.
I'll be back later to let you know how it went. :)

Ken,
I bet you're doing some kind of fight sequence, but I guess we'll find out when we see the movie. Are you using the puppet with the multiple arms? I can see how that can take a while.
I understand where you are coming from. I hate leaving puppets in mid sequence.
Are they going to release a new trailer so we can see some more of your work when it's mostly done?
Sorry for many questions I ask now and later. :)

OK, the first Dynamation day is in the can, all went well but, the shot's not done yet, it'll get finished tomorrow. Two seconds of a three second shot's not bad when you consider what I'm shooting. (but of course, you cannot know what I'm shooting so let's just say... it requires a certain level of precision)
I usually work for a half hour longer than I did but, I have this nervous rule about never lifting a puppet's foot off the floor at the end of a day. I just think it's safer to keep that sucker tied down and undo that screw first thing the next day when I'm fresh.
I'm definitely digging the way this is looking! :)

I hope I'm not our ONLY hope. I think everyone else is just waiting for someone to stick their neck out there first. If I survive without getting my head blown off, I think you'll see the army of stop motion special effects guys charge out from behind the barricades! :D

Ken,
Good luck Mr. Cole! For dynamation to return, you are our only hope!

Wow, fantastic! In the old Super 8 days, we had to use front projection (can you believe I *still* have my Edmund Scientific beam splitter??!??!), and move the projector one frame at a time and worry abut the bulb melting the film if I let it sit on still for too long...
