Producer Shahin Sean Solimon - Pushing The Dynamation Angle!
Discussion started by Ron Cole , on 20 July 02:49 PM
The Producer (who is also playing the part of Sinbad in the film) has made it abundantly clear to me that he is really pushing the stop motion effects (Dynamation if I may) as a big selling point for this new Sinbad film. He has told me that he believes that people WANT to see real physical special effects again.
As people in the business of stop motion know all too well, that is a position that has been VERY much outside of the mainstream of thought over the past decade. I'm so thrilled that some of the animation I'll be shooting for this film was originally slotted to be computer generated but because the test animations I've shot for this production managed to convince Mr.Solimon (Sean) it can really work, he's decided to change the original plan and go the Dynamation way!
If this goes as well as we hope, this could be a turning point at last for an art form that's been dissed and dismissed for far too long. I Thank Sean for taking this gamble and I'm betting that when this film is done, the audience will Thank him too. :)

Like all films (whether they admit it or not) this film IS hoping for a release in theaters, and with Patrick Stewart's name on the credits, it's chances are a bit better now.

Ken,
Yes! That's so awesome! I would love to see more Dynamation! In film school, I'm making my own dynamtion short film! I would love to see the final film. Is it going to be released world wide in theaters or something? Boy, if Ray Harryhausen was able to make convinceing effects in his day, imagine if he had our technology!

5 million, you could make an awesome movie! How much did the Schneer/Harryhausen movies cost in the 70s? We know the original Star Wars was made for about $10 million, which is nothing by today's standard, even if you adjusted for inflation (oh, George, what happened you???)

There needs to be more of a middle ground, between films made for a hundred million and films made for a hundred thousand... How's about 5 million? I'll take that amount and make an AWESOME film with it. Then I'll take take 20 thousand of that and find a ton of ways to advertise it on the internet.

Because they KNOW they will make that money back in triplicate, no matter what they put out.

That's why I've always wondered why the people with the big money in Hollywood continue to spend that kind of money on making films... THEY KNOW it doesn't make the difference, good scripts do.

There are used copies on Amazon for about $12, I might order one. I love the subject matter and I love low-budget movies, no matter how bad they are (Ed Wood is my hero!). What I HATE are HUGE budget movies that suck worse -- they have no business sucking, but they end up just being beautifully photographed crap, ya know?

I've never seen it, Paul has. All I've seen of it are the clips they sent me from it to use as background footage for my test shots.

Have you seen his previous movie, 'Djinn'? Someone is selling it Amazon for over $55!

Yep, the CGI animation world has been losing so many paying jobs to stop motion for the past 10 years it's really sad. They deserve more recognition for the long history of CG........ wait...... I meant...... OHHHHHHHH! I had that backwards, sorry. ;)

Great! I just read over at SMA that the CGI statue from the trailer will be silicone too.
I almost feel sorry for the CG guys :P

Wow, that's terrific news! What a spectacular opportunity you've gotten, a dream come true for a lot of kids who grew up on the Sinbad movies!
