I think I figured out the main reason why it felt weird. The following foot always stays connected to the ground for one frame too long, I shot it on 2s but on a scale of 24fps, that means that the following foot stays in contact with the ground for 4 frames which is way too much.

Thanks man, its still pretty rough though. It'll get there eventually. Just waiting on my ball and socket armature to arrive from the UK, hopefully that will be easier to animate.
