What secrets do you want to learn?

What secrets do you want to learn?

Is there anything specific you want to learn about animating in stop motion? I'm putting a list together for the update to the next DVD. Something I want to get started on soon. So any ideas or questions you have regarding how to animate something post it here and I'll cover it.

Re: What secrets do you want to learn?

I haven't watched the current DVD, but just something I've always wanted to know is how professionals plan, drill, and cover up the holes in the floor surface where the armatures are screwed in. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure more points of interest will pop up (though I mostly wonder about the technical side, not so much the animation itself).

How to prevent or fix flicker. This seems to be a big one if you can work that in.

Oh! I got another one: what materials do you use and how do you build hill-like (non flat/linear) terrain that could support puppets, being drilled into, and painted.

Re: What secrets do you want to learn?

Ok, I made a bunch of notes while going through it.

Points to improve upon;
-The sections on film/video cameras, lunchboxes, and lightmeters probably aren't really necessary any more.
-The section on the motion controlled camera track could be a little shorter and maybe include something on camera moves in after effects (Like the video that's already up on the AC youtube channel)
-Sections on surface gaging/timing/dope sheets could probably be condensed into one or two shorter sections. Timing and principles of animation are a huge area that you can never really stop learning about, so it's probably best to only give a very basic overview of say ease in/ease out and overlapping action.
-The section on making eyes from the plastic beads was a little bit long for what it was.
-Also the editing and overall production could have been better, I like the relaxed pace, but maybe get a friend to deal with the camera, and plan out exactly what you're going to do and say for each scene. Sometimes the audio sounded like it was in mono, too, but that's probably the camera/compression.

Things I'd like to see:
-A section going over different types of digital camera/framegrabber set ups (Computer controlled SLRs, other SLR+spycam, Digital video camera, webcam)
-The 'set basics' section is pretty much fine, though maybe cover different kinds of tie downs (Drilled, Magnets, Bolts into perforated sheet metal) and floors that aren't flat or man made.
-Simple wire flying rigs and removal?
-Armature section is ok, maybe update it with the new kinds of armatures that are in the store.
-Basic molding/casting
-Modular sets

If there's any way I can help out, Marc, I'd be more than happy to do it. Off the top of my head, I'm fairly decent with editing and audio, if you'd like help with that.

Re: What secrets do you want to learn?

fix flicker, the best way to set up cameras on sets and the best way to animate on sets and lighting timing out  shorts and lips sync how to make your animation look real best way to brake down worlds for lip sync. thats all i have for now.

and marc on your other old animation video the one-thou-sand-one things helps a lot to work out how many frames you will have to animate.
