Animation Problem
Hello everybody,
I'm a new member here, and I need someone to help me in making my stop motion movie. I have a problem which is "how can I make my puppet balanced on the middle of the set while filming, I'm trying to figure out a way doing that like rigs or something but I feel it is hard to do. I hope you guys can help me with that.
Thanks
Re: Animation Problem
I usually balance my clay characters by giving them armatures and big feet.
For a rigging system I took a one inch diameter dowel and nailed into an upright 2x4 on a base. I then loop a piece of metal wire onto the dowel so that the nonlooped end can slide across the set and be used to help make object float or balance.
I also somtimes just take a smaller sized dowel and then lodge it into a big blob of clay. I then set it up so it's lodged into the back of the character to help make it steady.
I hope this helps in some way.
Re: Animation Problem
There are many cheap ways to get this done, like the afore mentioned big feet technique, but there are other, more time-consuming ways too.
If you are proficient at photoshop/ photo editing (any photo retouching program will do), you can build a rig with a very heavy base (like a block of lead), that has a rod coming out like an arm - you can use this to hold the character without taking up too much screen space - just editing out the dowel that is holding up the character. For a similar example, see this: http://www.stopmotionanimation.com/handbook/12.htm
The other way, which I used to use, was to go berserk with the character until it would finally not move. . . or hold it, and right when you take the photo yank your hand out of the screen - works really well, with the motion blur of the falling character.
In all seriousness, though, I would recommend building a simple wire armature, and then placing clay around it - easier to control and stand (by 'stand' I am welcoming you to the world of tie-downs - screwing into the sets).
