Super Sculpey or Foam?

Super Sculpey or Foam?

OK, now i really need some help deciding what material i should make my puppets out of. I am trying to decide whether foam or clay is better on a wire armature. First I'll give some criteria I need my puppet to meet.

-needs to be able to walk and run
-sit down on chairs etc.
-will be 150mm or 6" tall
-need to be able to animate their faces (mouth is 'stuck on' so will not be sculpted int the head but i wanted similar eyebrows to Gromit from Wallace and Gromit)

When I can scan my concept art I'll post it here to give you a better idea of what is required. I'm also not sure whether to have the head as clay or foam if the rest of the body is foam. the head isn't distinctly separated from the body by a neck however and this could be a problem...

All constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

Jarrad

Re: Super Sculpey or Foam?

You may want to consider making a bigger puppet. 6" is might be difficult to animate. Whether or not to use clay or foam will be entirely up to you. Both have their positives and negatives.

are you sure? cause most puppets of seen have been about that scale. what size would you recommend then?

Re: Super Sculpey or Foam?

I would say that you should try a combination.  Maybe clay for the face, hands, and feet, and then foam for the rest.  I'm trying that right now with a new puppet of mine.  I'm going to see if it works out.

Re: Super Sculpey or Foam?

Fair enough, how do you blend the colours to hide the join lines? If you could let me know how well it works out for you, that would be awesome.

Scottdaros, the reason I chose 6 inches is because that conforms to the scale of 1:12 given that they would be 6 foot tall in real life. this means I have access to a lot of doll house items for props.

Re: Super Sculpey or Foam?

Have you made your puppet yet? Looking at your design, I'd go with foam. Your chicken has quite a fat body, and clay would perhaps be too heavy. If you glue the foam to the armature and trim it to look how you want, you could finish it by sticking individual feathers on - I think that would give a great effect. Although, this would not give you brows like Gromit. I don't see why you couldn't make the head from clay and the body as described above (but make sure your armature is strong enough to support the extra weight up top). Your design has a distinct neck line, which could work to your advantage. Rather than speculating the pro's and con's, best thing to do is pick a method and try it. See how it goes and change it if you encounter problems.

Personally, I'd make it all from foam, using wire underneath foam/cotton/feathers for the eyebrow movement you're after. I'd use liquid latex for the arms and legs, but if that isn't an option, I'd make them from clay. To stop your armature cutting through and protruding the clay limbs, you could wrap the wire in foil and tape or something. Sorry if I'm stating obvious points, I don't know how experienced you are with this stuff.

On a side note, I can see potential problems with wanting your puppet to be able to sit. You haven't shown its rear end, but chickens usually have a big booty and feathery tail, so unless it's sitting on the floor or something, you're gonna need a big old chair! Of course, this all depends on your design.

Best of luck.

Ps Like the avatar! In 20 some years of gaming, Fallout 3 is probably my favourite game.

Re: Super Sculpey or Foam?

No, I haven't, wanted to do my research first. i was going to maybe make entire puppet from injected foam. wanted a smooth looking puppet so I don't think the feathers are my thing, a very good idea however and much appreciated. I know quite a bit about making the puppets but I've never combined different methods of puppet construction like I'm looking at doing now.

The body of the puppet is simply a perfect sphere so front is same as back but back has a couple of feathers, nothing huge.

thanks, is definitely an awesome game! although skyrim is next on my rpg list and looks amazing!

also, when having clay join to foam, how do you match the colour? is it simply a matter of painting the foam?

thanks for your input mate!

Re: Super Sculpey or Foam?

Oh, right, so you were meaning foam rubber - like foam latex, urethane etc? I thought you meant like cushion foam build-up. That's why I suggested adding feathers, to cover the unsightly trimmed foam. Okay, personally, I'd go with the flexible urethane foam that expands in a mould. This doesn't require baking, so is probably easier than foam latex. This isn't really my territory, so I can't help a great deal. If you're still planning a clay head, I don't suppose it matters if you paint the foam or mix the colour of the clay to match. It sounds like you want the difference in materials to be unnoticeable, so the best option would be making it all from one or the other. I'd definitely bulk out the puppet with foil if you go the clay route.

In my experience, you can research until your head pops, but you learn a hell of a lot from actually getting your hands dirty and doing it.

Skyrim looks good, but I can't afford to put in the hours that such an RPG requires (I think I was approaching 200 hours for Fallout), and I'd rather be doing something creative and constructive, like making stop-mo films.  big_smile

Re: Super Sculpey or Foam?

yeah, I plan for it to look smooth and flush. so that means no seam lines and no stop and start of two different materials that stick out like sore thumbs! definitely not making body 100% clay! I knew that would be too heavy from the start! haha.

i know, I learn with my hands but I'm also a perfectionist and have high expectations of myself haha.

skyrim looks AMAZING! benefit of working at EB Games is i get kool stuff and collectors editions of awesome games and early knowledge of them ;p. played the 3DS like two months before public launch! was awesome. anyway, I don't norm get into RPGs and didn't like oblivion but liked morrowind and skyrim looks incredible! haha.

Thanks again for all your helpful input mate,

Jarrad
