Direction of Challenges

Direction of Challenges

Hi everyone, I still need to edit together the February challenge videos. That is not going to be a big problem by any means, but there is one thing that sticks out this month. The challenge is hugely popular! It has to be our most popular to date since re-creating our site. So my question is, should we stick to the same formula? Here's what we did:

1) Ron Cole voiced a TV ad
2) Everyone animated four seconds matching the voice
3) We edit it together to make a complete film

If we stick to this formula there are some issues we talked about during our live show. They are...

1) How do we pick a winner?
2) How do we pick the next months topic?

Now, there doesn't have to be a winner exactly. We can save our prizes for other contests. Maybe sculpting contests that we hold from time to time. I just wanted to hear everyones thoughts about this. Are you in favor of doing challenges the way we did Februarys challenge? If not, why? If so, how would you solve the problems of winners and topics?

Re: Direction of Challenges

Even though the ad challenge was really popular and had a lot of entries, I still prefer the random topics. I just like having total creative freedom like that. I think this challenge was so popular because the animations didn't need to be long, and the audio helped ideas come together quicker. Maybe create an original audio clip each month to animate? Sort of like 11 Second Club.

Re: Direction of Challenges

John e-mailed me his animation to edit together and added this concerning this thread:

"For future contests, I'd be in favour of variations in collaborative projects like picture consequences, with separate animators dealing with legs, body and head (to take a person as an example). Doing the same thing each month could get tiresome -- I think it's good to mix and match. Just my two pennies.."

You have a good point Scott. Maybe adding the voice tracks would be a middle ground where we get the best of both worlds.

Re: Direction of Challenges

I'll just echo what Scott said, as that's pretty much word for word what I was going to say. Plus, I think last month's popularity came from it being something different. And people would have been extra keen to help out making an advert for the site.

I think variety is the key to future challenges - like John states in his email about repetitive challenges becoming "tiresome", changing the format now and then keeps things fresh and interesting. His idea about people doing different body parts is a great concept. Not sure how it would work, but it's certainly unique in collaborative animation. It reminds me of the board game 'Misfits'. http://shop.vintagetoybox.co.uk/images/misfits.JPG

Just to reiterate, I wouldn't like to see an end to the traditional, individual challenges. I also enjoy the "total creative freedom", as Scott put it  smile

Re: Direction of Challenges

Nor would I as a relatively new user,  I like them.  Perhaps there are more formats available to play with;  They could follow a single theme, a line of dialogue from an existing work - or a line of poetry of literature, or music.  Maybe a first second and third winner could suggest words that are then placed in order of succession to generate a random theme:  eg.
First prize: "Drummer"
Second Prize: "Chewing"
Third Prize "Marbles"
Challenge = "Drummer Chewing Marbles"
That way even the winners are challenged...

Re: Direction of Challenges

I like the classic challenges, even if I don't usually have the time to enter, but a change in pace is nice every now and then. Perhaps throw in a different type of challenge every so often, like making an animation for a prerecorded voice over, or as earlier said, a sculpting challenge.

Re: Direction of Challenges

For the whole prizes thing, why not have two winners? Like one winner could be "Marc's Pick" and the other could be "Viewer's Pick"? Like with the current prizes, the Marc's Pick would win Anime Studio Pro and the Viewer's Pick could win Debut. Those are just my thoughts however.

Re: Direction of Challenges

All good ideas and thoughts. So maybe mixing things up is key here. We'll stick to what we have for now and maybe in a couple of months try a new idea or one similar to the ad again. Nederer, I like to give my input towards the entries but since we do it during the live show I try not to persuade anyone if I can help it. That way nobody can say I influenced everyone to pick someone  tongue

Re: Direction of Challenges

I'd like to see the regular challenges continue, with each person doing their own film based on the set theme.  (I don't find time to do them, but I do watch and vote in the live show.)  But an occasional variation like this one is good too!
I think it was partly the idea of contributing to an ad to help out, and partly the fact that 4 seconds isn't so demanding, that made this challenge so wildly popular.  I don't know if it would maintain thr same level if it was on every month.
Just a couple of things to sort out before the next group project like the ad -  probably need to settle on a common frame size as well as frame rate.  It may have to be 640 x 480 if that's the best some cameras can do.  But I guess you could have a higher res, widescreen framing animation, with smaller images on a tv screen.
A weird idea, an animated version of the mix and match head, body, and legs thing... but I like it!
Working to a common soundtrack was also really good - each person knew how long they had and what needed to be going on, but with room for interpretation.  So I second the audio clip idea.  That also applies to each one doing their own film - all using the same audio track could work for that too.
