Capturing software
So my mac is over 8 years old and i'm running OS X 10.4.11 and can't use Dragon or Smoovie or Frame Thief. I have a Nikon Coolpix L15 that has an allright built in stop mo mode but can really only get test quality with it. I also have an Olympus C-700Ultra that takes great quality pics, but it unfortunately is also old and doesn't seem to be compatible with these new fangled softwares. I tried Boinx's IStopMotion 2.0.8, which is ok, but it only works with the coolpix camera and is lo quality and i can't seem to control the focus. What should i do? Is there perhaps a better software out there i seem to be overlooking? Should i suck it up and buy a new fangled camera (anyone know what brand world most likely compatible? Nikon/Cannon?) or perhaps break down and get a new computer? Is there another secret cheat somewhere?
Maybe i should get a super 8 camera?
All suggestions welcome and much appreciated.
Re: Capturing software
Hmm.. I would have recommended iStopmotion. Why can't you use Dragon? If it's your OS just upgrade, Snow Leopard is said to have worked on macs over 15 years old. If it's your camera, I would keep checking the Dragon website because they are always adding compatible cameras. If not you could always buy a new camera. I recently brought a Canon 450d for £380 with a lens, so there not really overpriced, and you could make 5k quality videos. Both Cannon and Nikon compact and DSLR's are almost compatible with all Mac stop motion programs. I would recommend updating your OS, trying to get Dragon and buying a Canon or Nikon DSLR. Good luck!
Re: Capturing software
Thanks guys! I'll be looking at getting a second hand Nikon DSLR and a serious upgrade to the operating system ( i just take my computer for granted, expecting to just do what i want, i really need to get savvy with the techno end of things) . I appreciate the feed back!

Re: Capturing software
When you said you can't adjust the focus does that are you adjusting it manually on the camera or with the program? Because you shouldn't have trouble with that using any program so that problem might be the camera. Buy a new camera first, and work it with the computer and see if it doesn't fix the problem. You might get away with only having to buy the camera and not upgrading your operating system like you said.
Re: Capturing software
I run on a mac too. From the sounds of it, I would definitely either get a newer computer. The reason for this is that it would be more compatible with modern software such as Dragon or iStopMotion (which I currently use).
As for the camera, make sure to do lots of research. Nikon cameras' live view is said to overheat and Canon lenses are said not to be fully manual. I, personally, am thinking of getting a Canon T2i for bot stop motion and photography. You could always find a cheaper HD camcorder. These would work much better with the majority of frame capturing software.
Re: Capturing software
thanks again fellas! The nikon cool pix totally overheats and then you can't even turn it off, it just freezes and you have to take out the batteries, let it cool, then hope when you put the battries back in it will return to normal. I really like I stop motion and will buy it when i find the right camera. It's really overwhelming trying to get all these pieces of technology working together. I have to get a new computer now anyway, my bro. the computer tech says that my inverter (whatever that is) is shot and the mother board is a ticking time bomb. Got to get it all replaced before i start any big project.
All this advice really helps, i think it should all come together now.
Re: Capturing software
I"m on a mac running os 10.5.8, I have istopmotion 2.5 and according to the Boinx site I should be able to use my Canon 450D for capture. Apparently my camera should be in ptp mode but can't find any reference to this in any Canon stuff and can't get it to work. I've tried having live view running in the Eos utilities software. Any ideas most welcome.
