Cheap Armature Tutorial!

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

Good job, did you coat it with clay?

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

I see, but in a sense couldn't the same be done with my current armature - gluing the nut onto the screw at a point where it is tight enough? I'll have to try you suggestion without the glue first - though that would be a good way to set up an armature that you aren't planning on altering after it has been built.

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

the thread glue would definitely work on your original design. I just used screw posts and an oring to reduce the amount of parts needed lol. The down side to using screw posts though is that they dont come in very small sizes (diameter), so if one wanted to make tiny armature joints (like for hands or fingers) your original design would work best.

Great tutorial! My armature was not easy... look at the picture, I have to try to do it your way http://www.animateclay.com/components/com_agora/img/members/950/mini_my-love.jpeg

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

How well does that one hold up? Ball and joint ones are, from my experience, really good - if not a bit heavy. That one looks quite good.

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

Those balls are wooden beads so it was not very good idea. Construction is not heavy, but for this wooden balls it's to heavy. It can stand by it self but balls should be from something more permanent

Even the red ones? oh, smooth metal ones would work the best, I'd guess, though I've never really tried.

Smooth metal would be great I think, but I have no idea where to get it. My country is not the best place to get parts for armature ;/

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

Hey Jesse, thanks a lot for this tutorial. I made this cool little horse armature with it a while back. Sorry about the "yellowness" of the picture. I didn't have any thread glue and someone told me finger nail polish works just as well... yeah... not so much. Anyways, I got a little carried away and just sort of painted the entire armature with the fingernail polish thinking it could strengthen the wooden dowels. Seems a little silly now that I think about it. Anyways, for those asking, clay does stick to it, and I didn't have any problems with the clay getting jammed in the joints or anything so it's all good, although it could just be the layer of finger nail polish that the clay is holding onto.

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

This is an awesome tutorial. Thanks a lot.

I've found covering armatures wires with masking tape is a good way to get the plasticine to stick to it.
