iMotion experiment with X-Wing & Tie Fighter

iMotion experiment with X-Wing & Tie Fighter

I just spun round and round, shooting frame by frame. Got very dizzy. Laser blasts are all just cut out of notebook paper and taped onto the toys. There are adapters to let you attach your phone to a tripod. I'll probably get one, but I kind of enjoy the low-fi, hand-held quality of this. It won't replace a real stop-motion set up, but it's a lot of fun to play around with.

Hey I like that, you'd never know you were spinning in a circle, it looks like they are flying straight.

That actually looks pretty cool, i like your style. I would suggest using something else for the lasers, maybe you could use red tissue paper or red card?

Yeah, if I were going to expand on the idea, I'd have to upgrade the "special effects" a little. This was just dorking around at work and all I had was some flimsy notebook paper. Of course, if I made a longer short, I'd still keep my hand in every shot.

This reminds me of a technique I used to do to make lasers in my old super 8 films. I had a big pane of glass that I would put between my camera and the set (which might have a creature holding a ray gun) and next to the camera I'd have a piece of black poster board with a slice cut out of it; the slit was covered with colored tissue paper. I'd backlight the posterboard and angle it so when I looked through the viewfinder its reflection in the glass would line up with the ray gun on the set. I'd cover the slit with another piece of black paper and gradually expose the laser beam over a few frames. The final blast was another cut out (same kind of pointy burst I used on the tie fighter) plus I'd breath on the lens to fog it a little and make it glow. (all that would be hard to do while spinning around in my office chair.)

Yeah, but I'd pay good money to watch you try!
