new to stop motion
hi there after completing an animation in 3ds max for a national mental health campaign I have really got the bug for starting an stop motion animation. The current problem I face is that I am unsure where you should use the "fixed joints". As im not sure exactly how armatures behave in relation to a human body.
it's a ball and socket armature im looking to construct around 9" so also if anyone could give me a run down of the parts I need to buy for this it would be great.
if you wish to see my digital animation please look at this link...

thanks for any help you can offer

Re: new to stop motion
A ball and socket armature? You might be better off buying the full armature than making your own ball and socket - most of the parts will have to be made yourself.
Of course, since it sounds like you're just starting out in stop motion, it might be better for you to make a cheaper/simpler armature. Start out by making a wire armature like this one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkEcCZQeTyM
Good luck!

I, too, wish to know about what to use as an armature. Except for me, I am willing to buy the tools to make a very good armature. I am planning to start up an art workshop for me and my family, and clay animation has always been an interest of mine. What tools would I buy to make strong and professional armatures? I remember there used to be a tutorial on this website regarding armatures, but I cant seem to find it.... Sad panda.
Re: new to stop motion
zaneebaslave: I have a tutorial on the Puppet Making & Sculpting thread - though make sure you read it well first (and remember it isn't a perfect armature).
Well, multi-colored clay would be a good start for claymation. If you plan to use clay for animation, you don't necessarily need a super fancy armature holding it up. If I were you, I'd experiment first with wire armatures (often looked down upon, but truly are quite good).
As for tools to making a ball and socket armature - not sure, but I could tell you off the bat you'd need a drill press, and a metal cutting saw.
Re: new to stop motion
I saw that tutorial after I posted that comment. That technique for an armature looks a lot better than the wire armatures I've made in the past. With rusty old wire cutters and a nasty old drill, it massacred my hands to make them. And ever since then, I have been afraid to even work with armatures. This will probably save me money instead of having having to buy expensive tools. So... Yay!
