Future New Challenge Rule
Re: Future New Challenge Rule
Hi WillemK,
Yes, the rules are in effect. The knife throwing is the September monthly challenge, and there is still just over a week left to do something for it.
I guess there are two things about throwing - one is animating so the character looks like he is really throwing it hard enough to fly through the air. That uses basic animation principles so it's good practice. Like anticipation - winding up, getting ready to throw. Putting some snap into the actual throw. And follow-through, where your body tends to keep moving after you let go of the knife. Some ease-in to go smoothly from holding the knife still to moving it fast.
The other issue is how to make the knife fly without seeing the wires holding it up. Usually we use an image editing program with layers, like Photoshop or TV Paint, for wire removal. But for these exercises, it can also be good to see it with the wire still there - it's more about practicing the animation.
You can see the entries so far in the Monthly Challenge thread - I like the Father and Son Studios entry a lot. It actually tells a story, and does some nice bits like tossing the knife up in the air and catching it, before the main throw. But mine is just a simple exercise - so it can be as simple as you want.
The quarterly challenge is for more complicated scenes, and it's more important if they have a bit of a story to them. The current one is an undersea adventure, which I haven't done anything for yet. I don't have any underwater creature puppets, or a diving suit, or an underwater set, so there is a bit more time needed to make stuff for it - that's why there are 3 months allowed to make the film.
Re: Future New Challenge Rule
Hey there Guys, So sorry I haven't been here as much as I'd like at all. Marc nailed it with the "busy life bug" biting. I have been very busy but am dedicated to finishing the trophy sculpt before I work on anything else. Everyone that has won one of the challenges on SMMN before it closed or on here will still be getting a free trophy.
Is it ok to post updates here to get feedback Marc or should I start a new thread?

It'd be ok to post updates here, I think, but it might be better to start a new thread so that it's clearer, and maybe gets more attention which would maybe lead to more people wanting to win a trophy, right?
Also some people might get confused and think you're making models for a contest entry, if you post updates in here.
