The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams

The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams

Have you guys heard about this film?

I think it looks great! I don't know the story or what exactly it is, but the animation and the style of everything looks really good.
The English-Dub trailer is available here;

Although I read something weird on google's translation of the studio's website, apparently they began shooting the stop motion on the first of april 2009, and finished it on the 31st of august 2009. Now, they must be a huge studio to employ enough animators to get it done that fast, or the film might only have a little bit of stop motion in it, or maybe google's translated it badly.

Also thanks to Ben Whitehouse for pointing this film out on his blog.

I didn't know Scopas was still around. That's one awesome looking set and puppet, very clean. Almost looks like similar to Coraline in the facial style they chose.

Re: The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams

It was around as small stop motion clips when I was a child - used to watch it before going to bed. I think it was produced in the old eastern Germany. I found a link to the old versions, guess it is based on them - at least the character looks the same: http://www.sandmaennchen.de/geschichten … index.html

Re: The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams

Co-director Sinem Sakaoglu uploaded the first four minutes of the film.
Some info he provided about it:
   “It is an homage to the TV Sandman and the sand dreams are made of! Thus the more limited animation and the variations on the famous title song of the series. We also wanted to celebrate handcraft. One might say we took it too literally, but the hands appearing are really the hands of the animators who animated those shots. Pretty much everything was done in camera for this sequence, including the animation of the sand on glass. We did composite some layers together digitally though. Three very talented animators worked on the title sequence: Fritz Penzlin, Bernhard Schmitt, Dobrin Yanev. The clip also includes the opening shot of the film. Hope you enjoy it!”

The film looks great, I really hope someone picks this up for US distribution.

Oh wow, that's really nice. When it's time for me to go looking for work, I'll need to remember to look for European studios. It's a shame that it seems we're missing out on a lot because of the language barrier.

Re: The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams

I hope they will translate this to English. It's not as easy to watch the animation with subtitles because your eyes are always at the bottom of the screen. So far the animation looks good - I think in the credits they had rigs holding up everything. When the puppet walks down the paper stairs, you can see his feet don't look secured to the steps.
