While in the middle of changing studios and a complete reorganization I, once again, found my old mummy creation and thought he could use a friend- a ghost. If I find the time, I'm hoping to do a quick something with them both in the next week (if only to help my own sanity).

Either way, there are some amazing puppets in this contest and my ghost wanted to say 'hi' (even if it is a few minutes after midnight). A big congratulations to everyone who entered.

Wow, great job everyone. I knew there would be more last minute entries! I edited a few of your posts so everyone who entered has at least one picture in this thread. MattChappell  - the images are kind of confusing. In the future you might want to use the attachments link under the quick post box where you type your messages. You just browse for an image and upload it. It works most of the time, but if your image is too large or a .bmp it kind of has issues with that.

I'm going to have to go over all of the puppets and pick the best one.  Most likely tomorrow I'll be able to pick the winner. It won't be easy!

Re: October 7 - 21 Halloween Puppet Sculpting Contest!

Alright, it's time to pick a winner for the 2010 Halloween puppet sculpting contest! Here's my thoughts on everyones puppet creations.

RealDetectiveL's zombie mad hatter puppet is definitely scary. The chroma key background helps a lot to make the scene even darker. Over-all it's a very nice sculpt. The eye and tooth hanging makes the character frightening but not too serious.

FatherandSonStudios created a blue/green colored goblin. The puppet is simple, but nice and clean and expressive. He's something you'd expect to run off with your Halloween candy late at night from off your shelf.

Becky Smiths Spider Pumpkin takes the creepyness of a spider and blends it together with a pumpkin patch. The sculpting is smooth, and the vines are very detailed and look sturdy enough to animate. I'm hoping to never come across a creature like that anytime soon.

Marc_H created the mummy/skeleton/ghost. Probably the first of its kind to be seen on Halloween. The design is simple, but the style is comical and has a lot of character in the eyes. I can almost hear him making spooky sounds as he floats along.

Souhaib Balaas made a very nice traditional witch on a broom. She comes equipt with a hat and flowing white hair. The star background makes her really look like she's flying along. If witches really did exist I bet that would be an accurate representation.

Gianpaolo Faellis zombie puppet is one of the scariest and most realistically proportioned puppet in the bunch. The blue silicone skin and bloody mouth and jacket make me think he just ate someones brains for breakfast. Over-all, a very scary puppet that would look great animated.

Rufus' Creepy Bag Man is the funniest entry I think. It reminds me of a very grumpy old man, who maybe got tired of the politicians doing nothing about that zombie problem. So he took the law in his own hands. You know what they say, if you want a job done right - do it yourself. There are some very nice details, such as the hair and the bloody knife prop. Rufus tells me his girl friend helped make the sack. Good job both of you!

Mac McCords fish/lizard/leech "?" creation must be an evil mad scientist creation that escaped and is looking for his next meal. Maybe that's why my cat is missing? The colors are very nice, and as Mac said - he used a glue gun for the icky slimy bits. It turned out very nice.

MattChappells fortune telling Ferntilda puppet is one of the more intricate pupets, utilizing lots of fabric and components all together. The metal trinkets and skull pendant around her neck add a lot of mystery to this gypsy-like creation.

s_geralds Halloween scene looks like a nightmare come true. You go trick or treating and the pumpkin growing along the street snatches you up AND your candy. At least I think that he ate it. Where else could it be? A pumpkin has to eat you know? I really like the beady eyes of the kid in the ghost costume, a really funny picture.

Matt Goodlucks comical Frankenstein monster is super clean and colorful. It uses fabrics, clay and a prop. The details are all smooth and not over-bearing. He'd make a perfect puppet to animate for a TV commercial on Halloween. I think the little metal box on his head is proof that the Frankenstein monster really does have a tiny brain. Poor guy.

Shakycows mummy and ghost really remind me of the typical scene you'd expect to see on Halloween. Two people going outside in their costumes looking for candy. The mummy in particular has some great textures around his body. Just his eyes are visible as black recesses that make you wonder who would be underneath if you unwound him. Very nice, and the dark lighting adds to the spirit of the scene.

So who to pick!?! They are all really amazing puppets this time. I think we'll need to do more of these contests since it was so much fun looking at all of those puppets. Because of sheer amazement and unique-ness, smoothness and character....... the winner for this contest is.....drum roll please...... Becky Smith! ((clap clap clap clap))

Thanks everyone who entered. You all did great and there will be more chances to win prizes in the future.
