You don't hear much about Cuban stop motion. Then comes along 20 Años, a film that will surprise you with its amazing quality and attention to detail.
The film is about a marriage that has fallen apart, and reflects on what was a happy relationship. The puppets and sets are made of a very large scale compared to your average stop motion character that stands about 8 inches. 20 Años utilizes puppets maybe three times that size, along with props and sets of the same scale. The details of the fingers of the characters are amazing, even the dirt under the nails was added.
Barbaro Joel Ortiz is the film maker who conceived the idea and did much of the work. You can watch the entire film below, but you will need to wait for the advertisements to end. Also make sure to watch the credits as well since there is more animation during them.
You can watch the behind the scenes short that the team put together below. Although it is in Spanish, you can still get an idea of how it was created and see the true size of the puppets in the hands of the artists:
Rufus from Cuba who is one of our members brought the short to my attention. You can become his friend, ask him questions or leave a comment about the film on his profile found here.
