Barry Purves: Tchaikovsky and Plume

Tchaikovsky

Barry Purves was an integral part in the new film Tchaikovsky. How did he do it? Let's find out!

Author and animator Barry Purves helped to complete this new film called Tchaikovsky. The project was a collaboration between himself and a very small crew of people under the production of Loose Moose. Now the news is not exactly new, but the great news is there are a couple of videos interviewing Barry about his two recent projects. He gives some great insight into the process for Tchaikovsky and is very interesting to listen to.

Dim lights

To see a gallery of still shots from Tchaikovsky and time lapse video of Barry animating go here to Joe Clarkes web page.

The second video I want to share is on a French web page where Barry reveals how the film Plume was made. Plume is similar in style, but much more scary. Since Barry speaks in English at least most of my visitors here can understand. The puppets look amazing and if you like the Tchaikovsky interview this one is even more exciting as Barry shows you and animates the puppets. Watch the making of Plume here. How awesome are those puppets?

If you want to become Barrys friend on Facebook or ask him questions about his projects, you can find him over here.

It's a great film of what I've seen which was a fair chunk of it.
I helped out for a day at his house filming it was a great experience, attempted at doing some of the piano notation conversion into 24fps x-sheets (P.S. HARD!) this would have been a good reason to shoot certain scenes at 48/60 fps if only to get the very quick fingering (teehee) in time perfectly with the actual music notation. Not that you're going to notice in film, Barry is a master of this stuff and even this project was a testing trial.

I helped during the animation with a projection scene from a lady lover writing love letters in Russian and messing with film grains, scratches and dust. Might post a picture of me with the puppet now that the film is more or less public.
