Stop Motion AI Video Apps???

There is a new app that came out recently called Nauk Nauk that allows users to animate photos of action figures. You may have seen some AI applications that can do this already, such as the ones to animate old photos of people. But Nauk Nauk decided to center on toy figures which are the number one online way of creating stop motion these days.

Jakobe Productions put the app to the test by letting it animate his characters. Then he re-created the animation in stop motion using the same action figures for comparison. The video above showcases his results.

The topic of AI taking over all of animation is one that has been emerging as AI has quickly evolved. It does seem to be a potential good tool for animatics or possibly storyboards. The main issue seems to be that the AI sort of does what it wants. Not to mention, it doesn't look like stop motion for now and is very unpredictable in how it looks. Sometimes there are strange smears, the timing is unusual and there are no keyframes animators can utilize.

What does it mean for the future? Eventually a company will fix most of those issues. As with deepfake videos it will be tough to tell what is real. When that time comes, will audiences accept AI videos that mimic stop motion? Or will stop motion become more rare and precious of an art form? The new tech leaves only questions in an uncertain future for film makers.
